The Election Commission (EC) has announced the dates for polls to 137 Upazila councils in the Chattogram and Sylhet Divisions from May 4 to May 25.
According to a list published on the EC website, the electoral process has been divided into four phases.
In the first phase, polls to 45 upazila councils will be held on May 4. Besides, 44 councils will conduct their elections in the second phase on May 11, later 34 councils will go to the polls in the third phase on May 18.
The remaining 25 councils will hold theirs in the fourth and final phase on May 25.
The election watchdog had announced the schedule for polls in 344 Upazilas in six divisions — Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, and Mymensingh- on Wednesday (February 14).
Meanwhile, among the 495 upazilas in the country, there are 452 upazilas suitable for elections.
According to the law, the term of an Upazila council begins from the date of the first meeting. The elected council then serves a term of five years. An election must be held in the 180 days before the term ends.
This is the first upazila parishad election since 10 March 2019.
