At least one person was killed and fifteen others were injured in a gas cylinder explosion in the Mosharraf Mia Bazar area in ChittagongÕs Banshkhali upazila
The incident took place at around 10:30am on Thursday, Tofayel Ahmed, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Banshkhali police station confirmed the matter.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Eleven of the injured individuals have been identified as Mohammad Shakeel, 17, Nayan Islam, 23, Sadek Hossain, 38, Abu Taleb, 40, Mohammad Rajib, 28, Abdul Ghafoor, 40, Mo Ahid, 40, Shah Alam, 70, Mehdi Hasan Omar, 15, Rafsan, 15, and Mofizur Rahman, 54.
They are being treated at the Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex.
The OC said that the fire initially broke out from a pile of garbage behind a shop in the market and spread to a neighbouring shop and garage.
Locals promptly extinguished the fire, but a gas cylinder in the garage exploded, causing injuries to at least fifteen people.
One person died while being transported to the health complex.
Azadul Islam, an official from Banshkhali fire service, said that a fire service unit was dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports of the fire in the morning.
