Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the readymade garment workers who started protest blocking Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur’s Sreepur on Saturday morning demanding salaries under the new payment scale.
Around 6am, workers of AA Yarn Dying Ltd blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. When police tried to remove them from the road, they locked into a clash with the police members.
They were also seen throwing brickbats at the police and police vehicles. Then police chased the protesters and fired tear gas shells to control the situation.
Following the road blockade, vehicular movement on both sides of the highway came to a halt.
But at 8am, the movement of the vehicles became normal after police able to remove the protesters.
The protesting workers said that they have been demanding salary under the new structure for the last three months. But there was no response from the authorities.
A protesting worker said, “We demanded salary in the new salary structure announced by the government. We were in a peaceful position. Suddenly, the police threw tear gas shells and chased us. They have increased The salary in all the nearby factories have increased, but the authorities only make excuses when we talk about the salary. So it forced us to take on street.”
