Third phase upazila polls on May 29

The third phase of the upazila parishad elections will be held on May 29, the Election Commission (EC) has announced.

EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam declared the schedule after a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday.

This time, 112 upazilas will go to polls, EC Secretary said.

As per the schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is May 2, the date for scrutinizing the nomination papers is May 5, and the last date for withdrawing candidature is May 12.

Besides, aspirants can file appeals against the decisions of returning officers over the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers on May 6 to 8. The appeals will be disposed of on May 9 to 11.

The symbols will be allotted to candidates on May 13.

In the third phase election, votes will be cast through electronic voting machines (EVM) in 21 out of 112 upazilas.

The EC is holding the sixth countrywide upazila election in four phases this time.

Meanwhile, the first phase upazila parishad elections will be held on May 8, while the second phase polls will be held on May 23.
