BNP leader Dr Shahadat Hossain will take the oath of office as the mayor of Chittagong City Corporation on Sunday.
The oath-taking ceremony will be held at 11:30am at the secretariat in the capital.
AF Hassan Ariff, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, will administer the oath.
Several prominent figures and central BNP leaders are expected to attend the ceremony.
In this regard, Idris Ali, who is responsible for the BNP’s office in Chittagong, said: “After taking the oath as mayor, Dr Shahadat Hossain will visit the mausoleum of BNP founder and former President of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman. He will pay his respects at mausoleum and then participate in a mejban event.”
The mejban is being organized at the Jonaki Community Centre, adjacent to the BNP’s party office in Purana Paltan.
At least 1,500 to 2,000 party leaders and activists from Chittagong are currently in Dhaka for the occasion.
On Tuesday, Dr Shahadat will return to Chittagong to assume his duties as mayor.
Earlier, on October 1, the Joint District and Sessions Judge and Election Tribunal of Chittagong, Mohammad Khairul Amin, declared Dr Shahadat Hossain as the mayor in response to a lawsuit regarding the CCC election.
In the January 27, 2021, CCC election, Awami League candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was initially declared the winner with 369,248 votes, while Dr Shahadat Hossain, the BNP candidate, received 52,489 votes.
However, on October 8, the Election Commission announced Dr Shahadat as the winner and published the gazette the same night.
