Mobile internet users in several areas have complained that the social media platform Facebook and the Russian-based messaging app Telegram have been inaccessible to them since Friday afternoon.
In response to violence sparked by the quota reform movement, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram—all platforms under Meta—were shut down from the night of July 17 until Wednesday noon.
These platforms were reactivated after 2pm on Wednesday.
According to sources, the cache for Meta’s platforms on mobile networks was disabled after 12:15pm on Friday. Additionally, Telegram was also shut down on these networks.
Experts indicate that since Thursday night, internet speeds in the country have been normalizing. With over 120 million mobile internet users in the country, if Facebook remains blocked on mobile data, the use of VPNs will likely increase, which could negatively impact internet speed.
