Former foreign minister and senior Bangladesh Awami League politician Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday misspelled Donald Trump as “Doland Trump” in his congratulatory tweet on social networking platform X.
He meant to congratulate Trump for winning the US presidential election and becoming the 47th US president, but also misspelled Bangladesh as “Bagladesh”
He wrote: “Congratulations to Doland Trump. Hope that under his leadership the relationship between Bagladesh and with Bangladesh Awami League will be further strengthened. Awami League will work with him closely.”
In September, Hasan Mahmud had allegedly left Bangladesh for Belgium before the travel ban imposed on a number of ministers including him, reported by UNB, citing the claims of a Chittagong-based media and a national private TV channel.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Sheikh Hasina, in October had hired prominent Washington DC lobbying firm Stryk Global Diplomacy (SGD) to influence US policymakers.
The lobbying firm, led by Christian Bourge and Robert Stryk, has deep ties to president-elect Donald Trump, with both having served as advisers during his 2016 campaign.
Joy signed a six-month contract with SGD, paying $200,000 upfront (Tk2.4 crore), Netra News reported.
In return, the lobbyists will “engage with the executive and legislative branches of the US government to provide a unique insight on the current issues facing Bangladesh”.
Earlier, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) instructed all banks in the country to freeze the accounts of former foreign minister Hasan and his family members.
On September 2, a Dhaka court issued a travel ban on 26 people, including 18 former ministers and state ministers, over the corruption allegations against them.
Hasan is also facing several cases following the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led previous government.
Hasan served as the general secretary of the Belgium chapter of the Awami League from 1995 until he returned to Bangladesh in 2001.
