Jamaat: Aman Azmi’s statement his own, not party’s

Jamaat-e-Islami has clarified that former army officer Abdullahil Amaan Azmi is not associated with the party and that his statements are his own.
In a statement on Sunday, Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Prof Mia Golam Parwar said: “Recently, some national dailies and online news portals published reports regarding comments made by former Brigadier General Abdullahil Amaan Azmi. We want to make it clear that he is not affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami and has no organizational ties with the party.”
He further said: “Azmi’s comments are his own, and he does not represent Jamaat-e-Islami. Therefore, there is no basis to link his statements with the party. We urge all concerned to avoid any confusion regarding Jamaat-e-Islami based on his remarks.”
Azmi, the son of Jamaat-e-Islami’s former ameer Ghulam Azam, who was convicted for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, recently held a virtual press conference.
During this event, he called for changing Bangladesh’s national anthem, labelling it as “the bane of freedom,” and questioned the official figures of martyrs in the Constitution and Liberation War history.
Azmi had been missing for eight years before being released on August 7.
