A Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader was murdered at his residence in Dhaka’s Rajabazar area early Monday.

The killing took place at around 2.30 am at Paschim Rajabazaar area in the capital.

The victim, Anwarullah, was attacked while he was at home with his wife on the second floor of a residential building. CCTV footage shows two intruders cut through window grills to entered his apartment. They remained inside for nearly two hours before leaving through the same route.

Family members said the assailants tied up Anwarullah and his wife before killing him. After the attack, the intruders allegedly fled with eight bhori of gold and Tk 500,000 in cash. The family insists the incident was a premeditated killing, not merely a theft.

Neighbors said the incident has caused widespread fear in the area. One nearby resident said such incidents raise serious concerns about safety, while another said people rushed outside after hearing about the killing, only to find police had already cordoned off the area.

The victim’s nephew alleged that the attackers confirmed his death before leaving the apartment, claiming, “The assailants asked my uncle to hum Kalima Shahadat moments before killing him and then ensured he was dead before fleeing.”

Anwarullah was known locally as a homeopathic physician and was also involved in Jamaat politics. His political colleagues and neighbors have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the killing.

Police said it is too early to determine whether the incident was a robbery or a targeted murder.

Detective Branch official Talebur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said no case had been filed as of Monday, but preparations were underway.

He added that CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being collected and efforts are ongoing to identify those involved
