Video of Satkhira Jamaat MP goes viral; lawmaker says woman is his second wife
A video involving Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar) lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam has been circulating on social media since last night, drawing widespread attention.
The video appears to show the lawmaker with a woman in a room. In a statement issued today, he identified the woman as his second wife, Mariam Begum, and said the allegations surrounding the video were false.
Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam on Tuesday said the viral video circulating on social media shows a private moment with his second wife, dismissing claims that it depicts an extramarital affair.
In a statement, he said that on July 13, he visited the business office of his second wife’s father in the capital’s Moghbazar along with his first and second wives.
According to the MP, his driver and his second wife’s maternal uncle later brought several strangers to the office, held them hostage and extorted Tk 100,000. He claimed they later demanded several lakh taka more and threatened them after they refused to pay.
Gazi Nazrul alleged that the video of their private and intimate moments was recorded and later circulated on social media because of a family dispute.
He also said he married his second wife, Maryam Begum, on June 17 at a family ceremony with the consent of his first wife, adding that allegations of an extramarital relationship were false.
The lawmaker demanded a swift and impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for those involved in recording and spreading the video, alleging that it violated his personal privacy, social dignity and moral character.
District Jamaat Secretary Azizur Rahman also claimed that Nazrul Islam had married for a second time with the consent of his first wife and that the video was leaked from CCTV footage recorded at a house in Dhaka.
