Graduate degree must for UP chairman election, HC issues rule

The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule to ensure that the minimum educational qualification to contest in the election of Union Parishad chairman is a bachelor’s degree.

An HC bench of Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar issued the rule after the initial hearing of a writ filed by two Supreme Court lawyers.

Lawyer Kazi Ferdousul Hasan confirmed this. Secretaries of LGRD, Law Ministry and Chief Election Commissioner have been asked to respond the rule.

In the issued rule, the court asked why Section 26 of the Union Parishad Act, which fails to determine educational qualifications, should not be declared inconsistent with the Constitution.
