Death toll from a massive landslide in the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing has risen to 11. 50 people are still missing and 10 injured were rescued. Reuters reported.

State media reported on Thursday, torrential rains triggered a massive collapse of a mountainside on the morning of 17 July in Pengshui County. This area is a scenic spot, located 270 kilometers from Chongqing.

Rock and debris rushed down the slope. The avalanche crushed a cluster of riverside residential buildings and businesses downhill.

‘After multiple rounds of life detection and search, no signs of life remain,’ state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday. It added that the onsite operation has now entered an ‘in-depth rescue stage.’

Specialized teams are continuing efforts to recover the remains of those unaccounted for, according to Xinhua. The confirmed death toll previously stood at eight, with 34 people reported missing.

Earlier this week, rescue teams used explosives to blast through massive boulders that were blocking recovery operations.

‘Due to the large volume of collapsed material at the site, the large size and number of fallen boulders, the narrow operating space, and the poor slope stability, the rescue operation is extremely difficult,’ state media said.

China remains one of the most landslide-prone countries in the world. Over the past decade, around 294 people have died nationwide in at least five major landslide disasters.

The deadliest among them occurred in December 2015. Over 70 people were killed when a massive pile of construction waste collapsed at an industrial park in Shenzhen.
