Tenure of independent commission on BDR carnage extended until Dec 7

The government has extended the tenure of National Independent Investigation Commission, tasked with reinvestigating the 2009 BDR carnage, until December 7, Cabinet Division announced on Wednesday.

The commission, formed by the interim government on December 24 last year, is chaired by retired Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman.

It was initially given three months to submit its report but has received multiple extensions; two three-month extensions followed by an additional two-month extension.

The previous tenure expired on November 30. The new seven-day extension takes effect from December 1.

The commission has been tasked with uncovering the nature and full scope of the events that occurred on February 25–26, 2009, at then BDR headquarters in Pilkhana.

Its responsibilities include identifying all those involved, including perpetrators, accomplices, conspirators, instigators and individuals or groups; domestic or foreign, linked to the killings, as well as anyone who destroyed evidence.

The commission submitted its report to Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus on November 30.
