Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice-President (VP) Shadik Kayem on Friday declared Shahbagh intersection renamed as “Shaheed Osman Hadi Square”, amid ongoing protests demanding justice for the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha.
The announcement was made during a rally at Shahbagh, where Kayem said protesters would continue their movement until those responsible for Hadi’s death are brought to justice, calling on anti-fascist forces to unite.
Hundreds of students and members of the public gathered at Shahbagh from early morning, with crowds swelling after Jumu’ah prayers. The intersection remained blocked to traffic throughout the day as protesters offered prayers on site and chanted slogans demanding accountability.
DUCSU General Secretary (GS) SM Farhad told the gathering that all those involved in the killing must face the strictest punishment. Demonstrators raised slogans against fascism and foreign interference, while students from several universities and madrasas joined the protest.
Hadi was shot in the Bijoynagar area on December 12 and later taken to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died on Thursday night.
The protests spread beyond Dhaka, with demonstrations reported in Chattogram, Khulna, Netrokona and Jhalokathi. In the capital, late-night unrest saw attacks on media offices in Karwan Bazar and Farmgate, leaving several buildings damaged and disrupting newspaper publication.
Protesters have vowed to continue their sit-in at Shahbagh, insisting the area—now declared Shaheed Osman Hadi Square—will remain occupied until justice is ensured.
