The United Nations has strongly condemned the killing of martyr Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a prominent leader of last year’s protests in Bangladesh and urged all parties to refrain from violence.
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk expressed deep concern over Hadi’s death, which followed injuries sustained from a shooting last week.
In a statement on Friday, he stressed that retaliation and revenge would only worsen divisions and undermine the rights of all.
Türk called on the authorities to carry out a prompt, impartial, thorough and transparent investigation into the attack and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Following Hadi’s death, protests erupted across Bangladesh, with some buildings being vandalised and torched and several journalists reportedly attacked.
With parliamentary elections scheduled for February, Türk highlighted the importance of maintaining an environment where people can safely participate in public life and express their views freely.
He urged authorities to uphold the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and journalists’ security, while taking measures to prevent further unrest.
The UN High Commissioner’s Office also reaffirmed its readiness to work with authorities and stakeholders to support human rights and prevent further violence.
