European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller on Sunday described the attacks on Prothom Alo and the Daily Star offices as a direct assault on press freedom and freedom of expression, calling the incidents a “grave moment” for Bangladesh’s democracy.
Miller made the remarks while visiting the Prothom Alo office on December 21 to express solidarity with journalists following last Thursday’s arson, vandalism and looting at the media outlet’s premises.
He observed the post-attack situation from outside the building and spoke with senior Prothom Alo journalists about the overall circumstances surrounding the incident.
During the visit, the EU ambassador also inquired about the role of security forces in maintaining law and order in the aftermath of the attack.
“I am here to stand in solidarity with all journalists of Prothom Alo after the arson attack on the building last Thursday evening,” Miller said. “An attack on Prothom Alo and the Daily Star is an attack on media freedom and freedom of expression.”
Referring to the upcoming national election, Miller said safeguarding space for free expression was especially critical as Bangladesh moves toward the polls. He expressed hope that such incidents would not be repeated, warning that the attacks marked a deeply troubling moment for the country’s democratic system.
Addressing journalists, the EU ambassador urged them to remain resilient and continue their professional work. He said accurate reporting and accountability journalism were essential to ensuring that the election is held peacefully and fairly.
Prothom Alo Managing Editor Anisul Hoque, Deputy Editor Lajjat Enab Mahshi, Online Editor Shawkat Hossain and other senior officials were present during the visit and discussed the situation with the EU envoy.
