BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said on Monday that the party Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will be registered as a voter on December 27, ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election.

Salahuddin made the statement after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka’s Agargaon.

He said Tarique Rahman is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on December 25 and will begin all necessary procedures to obtain his voter ID card on Saturday (December 27).

Earlier in the afternoon, a BNP delegation led by Salahuddin Ahmed met the CEC at his office. Election Commissioner Rahmanel Masud and Election Commission Senior Secretary were present at the meeting. Other members of the BNP delegation included Ismail Jabiullah, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, and Dr Mohammad Zakaria, former acting secretary of the Election Commission.

Tarique Rahman is set to return home on December 25 after a long period abroad and has announced plans to contest the forthcoming national election. However, his name has not yet been included in the voter list. Under election rules, adding a name to the voter roll after the announcement of the election schedule requires approval from the Election Commission.
