No fuel crisis in country, minister urges public to avoid panic buying

Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has assured the public that there is no fuel crisis in the country, urging citizens to purchase only what they need and avoid panic-driven stockpiling.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence on Monday, the minister said fuel imports have continued even with government subsidies.

He acknowledged that a brief supply disruption occurred over the two-day Eid holiday when distribution operations were paused, but said the situation has since normalized.

He noted that fuel imports this year are approximately 25 percent higher compared to the same period last year, leaving no cause for concern about supply shortages. “Everyone will get fuel. We request people not to collect more than they need,” he said.

State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib echoed the assurance, telling media that the government successfully prevented attempts to raise fuel prices during the crisis. He said various government initiatives ensured the fuel situation had no negative impact on Eid travel despite pre-holiday concerns.

He added that security measures around fuel stations implemented before Eid will be strengthened further if necessary.

However, petrol pump owners presented a contrasting picture. Syed Sajjadul Karim Kabul, convener of the Dhaka Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers Distributors Agents and Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association, said depots are supplying significantly less fuel than demanded.

He said pumps with available stock remain open, but those in areas with low supply have been forced to shut temporarily. He clarified, however, that no permanent closures are expected.

The gap between government assurances and ground-level reports from pump operators suggests the fuel supply situation remains uneven across different areas, though officials say monitoring efforts are continuing to stabilize distribution.
