Govt maintains month long fuel reserves amid supply concerns says cabinet secy

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani assured the nation Wednesday that the government possesses adequate fuel oil reserves, revealing that the Prime Minister has directed authorities to guarantee stable supply continuity.

Ghani briefed journalists following a cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat, addressing public anxiety over fuel availability that has triggered panic purchasing in recent days.

The cabinet secretary disclosed that current reserves have expanded significantly from historical levels. “Previously we maintained reserves for approximately 15 days, but now we hold nearly a month’s supply,” Ghani stated.

As public confidence stabilizes, the government intends to further increase strategic reserves to effectively manage potential energy disruptions, according to the official.

An energy situation review meeting convened Wednesday morning involving relevant ministers and officials. The Prime Minister issued directives for implementing necessary measures to address energy sector challenges during that session.

Ghani explained the cabinet convened Wednesday rather than the customary Thursday schedule because March 26 features multiple national observances. Five agenda items received discussion during the meeting.

Members began proceedings by commemorating the tragic March 25 night when occupying Pakistani forces conducted genocide operations. They honored how these events precipitated the independence declaration and launched the Liberation War, offering prayers for martyred freedom fighters.

Five constitutional agenda items advanced through formal consideration. The draft amendment to the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act 2026 secured both approval in principle and final endorsement.

Two finance-related legislative drafts reflecting expenditures for the fiscal year concluding in July, including revised final spending figures, received principle and final approval.

Another financial ordinance amendment also obtained dual approvals, Ghani noted. This ordinance forms part of the annual financial framework for fiscal year 2025-26 under Constitutional Articles 86 and 27, with revenue collection proceeding since June 26, 2025.

The secretary explained that tax collection operates under specific statutory authority. Converting the ordinance into permanent legislation required the draft Finance Amendment Act for fiscal 2025-26 to receive final cabinet approval, pending Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division vetting.

Among 133 laws enacted during the previous cabinet’s tenure, five have been designated for conversion into formal acts. Necessary procedures will proceed before parliamentary presentation, Ghani confirmed.

The reassurances come amid heightened public concern over fuel availability, with government officials repeatedly urging citizens to cease panic buying and trust supply chain stability.
