The fire that broke out on Dhaka-bound ‘Chattala Express’ train in the Faujdarhat area of Sitakunda in Chattogram early today was brought under control.
The fire service managed to bring the fire under control after an hour of effort. The specific cause of the fire is still unknown.
Railway authorities said that train services to Dhaka are operating normally using an alternative route. The incident occurred at around 5:45 am on Thursday (March 26) in the Faujdarhat area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram.
Upon receiving information, Fire Service officials quickly rushed to the scene and successfully controlled the fire. Two units from the Kumira station of the Fire Service Chattogram region arrived promptly to tackle the fire. After about an hour of work, the fire was extinguished around 7:35 am.
The fire initially affected the power car of the Chattala Express train and then spread to an air-conditioned compartment nearby. However, the exact cause of the fire has not been confirmed yet.
The Divisional Manager of Chattogram Railway, Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, said that the fire originated in the power car and then spread to another compartment. Fortunately, passengers in that compartment had already evacuated along with their luggage, and no injuries were reported.
Officials said the damaged compartments have been isolated, and the power car has been removed. The train will resume its journey to Dhaka once the necessary adjustments are made. Passengers were safely evacuated to Bhatiari station after the incident. Train services on the Dhaka-bound lane from Chattogram were temporarily affected, but no cancellations were made. Train operations to Dhaka are running smoothly via an alternative route.
Railway officials are on-site overseeing the removal of the affected train. The Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Rafiqul Islam, said that the fire was swiftly controlled with the assistance of the Fire Service and army personnel.
