UN reaffirms its ‘unwavering support’ of Bangladesh

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has reaffirmed the organisation’s unwavering support and solidarity with Bangladesh during a meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New York.

During the meeting at UN Headquarters, the secretary-general extended his congratulations to the newly formed government and highly commended the country for its “humanitarian leadership and generosity in sheltering forcibly displaced Rohingya people”, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations said in a statement.

The talks covered a range of contemporary global issues, with Foreign Minister Khalilur highlighting the challenges developing and vulnerable nations face due to the current global oil crisis. He also pointed out that it had a disproportionate impact on poorer countries.

The foreign minister also extended an invitation to the secretary-general on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for a visit to Bangladesh at his convenience. Guterres welcomed the invitation, expressing his appreciation.

Both sides concluded the meeting by “reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Bangladesh and the United Nations in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development,” the statement said.
