Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday said the government is considering revising the current police uniform, citing dissatisfaction within the force.
He added that a final decision may be taken at the highest policy level, potentially allowing a return to a previously used uniform considered more suitable.
The remarks came during the passing-out parade of 43rd BCS (Police) batch at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi, marking the completion of one year of basic training for trainee Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).
Addressing the new officers, the minister called for building a people-oriented and discrimination-free police force, stressing reform, accountability and professionalism.
He underscored that the police should serve citizens rather than any political group and noted that outdated colonial-era laws are being revised to meet modern demands.
He said the government aims to transform the police into a modern, service-focused, and humane institution free from partisan influence. Plans are also underway to ensure merit- and seniority-based recruitment, posting, and promotion through a proposed Police Reform Commission.
Reiterating a zero-tolerance policy on corruption, the minister urged officers to enhance their technical capabilities to tackle emerging digital crimes.
He also highlighted the importance of discipline, leadership, loyalty and respect for the chain of command, reminding them that all citizens are equal before the law.
The batch included 72 trainees who began their training on March 1, 2025.
The parade was commanded by trainee ASP Ahmed Sadman Shakib. Md. Fahim Faisal secured top honors as Best Probationer and Best Academic, while Md. Arafat Hossain, Shaon Reza and Bapi Kumar Das received awards in field activities, horsemanship and shooting.
Among those present were Land Minister Md. Mizanur Rahman Minu, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, Inspector General of Police Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and academy principal G M Azizur Rahman.
The newly commissioned ASPs will now be deployed across the country for six months of field training.
