Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir has described the proposed Japan”Bangladesh Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) as a major milestone for strengthening bilateral trade and investment.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Kazuiki Kataoka, country representative of Japan External Trade Organization, at his office at the Secretariat on Thursday, according to a press release.
The meeting focused on expanding trade and investment ties and enhancing overall economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.
The minister highlighted opportunities for increased Japanese investment, particularly in special economic zones, infrastructure development, industrialisation and export diversification.
He said Bangladesh’s steady economic growth, skilled workforce, and investor-friendly policies have created a conducive environment for foreign investment.
The proposed EPA, he added, would not only deepen economic relations with Japan but also serve as a model for Bangladesh in negotiating similar agreements with other countries.
Kazuiki Kataoka noted that Bangladesh’s investment climate has improved in recent times and expressed optimism that the EPA would further boost trade and attract more Japanese investors.
He said several Japanese firms have already shown interest in investing in the country.
He also pointed to Japan’s contribution to major infrastructure projects, including the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Dhaka Metro Rail, adding that such investments are helping generate employment and support development.
Kataoka reaffirmed JETRO’s commitment to strengthening commercial ties and promoting Bangladeshi products in the Japanese market.
Both sides expressed their intention to continue working together to further deepen the economic partnership between the two countries.
