The Parliament on Wednesday passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2026, marking a significant turning point in the country’s political landscape.
The bill was approved by a voice vote at approximately 12:15PM, granting formal legal backing to the previously imposed ban on the activities of the Awami League.
With this legislative approval, the prohibition now carries a clear statutory foundation under the country’s anti-terrorism framework.
The bill formalises amendments to ordinances issued by the interim government, including the Anti-Terrorism Ordinance of May 12, 2025.
Under these provisions, sections 18 and 20 of the 2009 Anti-Terrorism Act were amended to prohibit the activities of the Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations.
