Govt considers adding debate to academic curriculum: Info minister

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Zahir Uddin Swapon on Monday said that the government is considering introducing debate into the national curriculum to promote critical thinking and analytical skills among students.

The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the prize-giving ceremony of a debate competition held at Dhaka Residential Model College.

He noted that in a rapidly changing world, young people must develop analytical ability and independent thinking.

Encouraging debate in educational institutions, he said, would help students avoid accepting ideas without question.

He emphasized that fostering creativity and analytical skills is essential for meaningful education. According to him, critical thinking enables students to better understand concepts and apply knowledge in real-life situations.

Swapon also urged students to adopt a progressive mindset and adapt their thinking to modern times.

He added that strengthening institutional progressiveness could help bridge the gap between new media and traditional media.

The program was presided over by Mohammad Jaber Hossain, Principal of the college.
