Possible militant attack in country; CCTC assures precaution measures being taken

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit has confirmed it is investigating intelligence reports of potential militant plots targeting high-profile locations, including the National Parliament.

During a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Friday, CTTC Joint Commissioner Munshi Shahabuddin addressed the concerns, stating that the unit’s cyber intelligence wing is actively analyzing the threats. While acknowledging the gravity of the reports, he urged the public not to succumb to panic.

“We have received the information and are currently processing it,” Shahabuddin said. “There is no reason to be alarmed. Our teams are fully prepared to counter any such activities.”

The security alert follows an internal memorandum issued by Police Headquarters on April 23. Signed by Deputy Inspector General Quamrul Ahsan, the notice warned that members of a banned extremist group have been in regular contact to orchestrate coordinated attacks.

According to the document, potential targets include military and police installations, critical infrastructure, religious sites, and entertainment venues.

Intelligence sources have specifically pointed to communications between two former members of the Bangladesh Army and Istiak Ahmed Sami (also known as Abu Bakkar or Abu Mohammad), a recently detained member of an outlawed extremist organization.

When questioned about specific security adjustments at sensitive sites, the Joint Commissioner declined to provide details, citing the confidential nature of tactical security planning.

He also noted that it is currently premature to name specific groups or individuals involved as the investigation is ongoing.

“We are working on identifying the actors involved. If we find evidence of militant presence or plotting, we will take decisive action,” Shahabuddin added.

The warning marks a shift in tone from previous administrative statements. During the preceding interim government, former DMP officials had suggested that militancy in the country was largely eradicated or staged for political reasons.

However, this latest high-level alert indicates that law enforcement agencies are maintaining a state of high vigilance.

In response to the threat, Police Headquarters has directed all relevant divisions”including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Branch (SB), and district-level police chiefs”to intensify surveillance and enhance inter-agency coordination to prevent any security breaches.
