Amir Hamza, a member of parliament from Kushtia-3, has been granted anticipatory bail in a defamation case filed over alleged derogatory remarks about Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, the minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
A dual bench of the High Court passed this order on Monday after a hearing.
The case was filed at the Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court by Advocate Humayun Kabir Colonel, general secretary of the District Lawyers’ Association on April 2.
A Sirajganj court on April 21 issued an arrest warrant against Mufti Amir Hamza.
In a Friday prayer sermon at Haripur Jame Masjid on March 27, Amir Hamza allegedly claimed that the current DC of Kushtia had spent a huge sum of money to get transferred to the district. The statement as widely circulated in media and social platforms, causing public confusion and damaging the image of the government.
The Sirajganj court on April 2, issued a summons directing Amir Hamza to appear on April 21.
