CU student drowns in Kaptai Lake

 

A Chittagong University (CU) student drowned while bathing in Kaptai Lake at Balu Char spot under Balukhali union in Rangamati Sadar on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Intishar Hasnat Jimel, 22, a student of International Relations and  son of Md Belal Uddin and Shahan Akhter Nasrin of Pekua upazila in Cox’s Bazar district.

According to locals and police, Intishar travelled from Chattogram to Rangamati in the morning along with three friends. In the afternoon, the group visited Balu Char in Kaptai Lake by engine boat for sightseeing.

At one point, all four entered the lake for bathing. Intishar, who reportedly did not know how to swim, went underwater and drowned.

On receiving information, a diving team from the Rangamati Fire Service rushed to the spot around 5:00PM and conducted a search operation.

Fire Service Deputy Director Newton Das said, his body was recovered from the lake after about 30 minutes of searching.

Rangamati Superintendent of Police Md Abdur Raqib said the body was sent to Rangamati Sadar General Hospital for an autopsy.

The body will be handed over to the family after completion of legal formalities, he added.
