Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed’s alleged role in past national elections is among several issues currently under investigation by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing at his office, the chief prosecutor alleged that Benazir Ahmed had played a controversial role in elections held during the tenure of the previous Awami League government and was one of the key figures behind what he described as illegal elections.

Aminul Islam claimed that investigations are underway into around 10 cases involving the former police chief, covering a range of allegations including enforced disappearances, killings and other incidents that fall within the tribunal’s jurisdiction.

He alleged that Benazir Ahmed was involved in the 2013 Shapla Chattar operation and that a case related to enforced disappearances during his tenure as Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is currently under trial.

The chief prosecutor further alleged that the former IGP wielded significant influence during the previous government’s tenure and was linked to numerous incidents of human rights violations and abuses of power.

“Every election held during the previous regime had his controversial involvement,” Aminul Islam told reporters, adding that the tribunal would give the allegations against Benazir Ahmed the highest priority.

He also referred to corruption allegations previously brought against the former police chief, saying public disclosures regarding his wealth and assets had led to investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The chief prosecutor said the tribunal remains committed to ensuring accountability through due legal process.
