Nahid calls 3 ministers ‘Failures’

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has criticized three key government ministers, accusing them of failing to ensure justice, public security and proper media policies.

Speaking at a rally in the capital’s Bijoy Nagar on Tuesday, organized by an 11-party alliance demanding justice for enforced disappearances and killings during the previous regime, Nahid said the law minister had failed to ensure justice, the home minister had failed to provide security  and the information minister had failed by allowing what he described as supporters of the Awami League’s civil society groups space in the media.

Nahid said the Awami League was facing public accountability over allegations of mass killings, while the BNP was also facing criticism for failing to implement reforms.

“We have to continue our struggle against both forces. Our movement for reforms, justice and protection of Bangladesh’s sovereignty will continue inside and outside parliament under the leadership of the 11-party alliance,” he said.

Expressing disappointment over the slow progress in legal proceedings, Nahid said that even two years after the mass uprising, people were still taking to the streets demanding justice.

Criticizing the progress of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Nahid claimed that no new verdict or investigation report had been submitted in the past four months.

“This is clearly a failure. The chief prosecutor has failed to carry out the responsibilities given to him and should resign immediately. A new, capable and responsible person should be appointed to complete the trials,” he said.

Nahid also demanded steps to ensure accountability through the tribunal and called for action regarding the political future of the Awami League.

He warned those attempting to bring the Awami League back into mainstream politics, saying they would face the same consequences.

The NCP leader also demanded immediate justice for incidents including the July killings, the Shapla incident, the Pilkhana killings and the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi.

He warned that failure to ensure justice could create political instability, saying, “If justice is not ensured, this government will not be able to complete its five-year term.”
