BNP sets up reception committee for Tarique’s homecoming

The BNP has formed a reception committee to oversee preparations for the return of its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on December 25 after more than 17 years in exile.

According to BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan, the committee was formed on Monday with BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed as convener and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as member secretary.

Party sources said the committee comprises BNP’s 10 divisional organising secretaries, presidents and general secretaries of its affiliated organisations, as well as the conveners and member secretaries of the party’s Dhaka North and South city units.

The committee held its first meeting on Tuesday afternoon, during which members discussed a detailed work plan to ensure a smooth and organised reception for Tarique Rahman.

Earlier on Monday, BNP and its front organisations held a joint meeting at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office to discuss reception arrangements.

The meeting was chaired by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Under the party’s plan, a large number of BNP leaders and activists are expected to gather at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on December 25 to welcome Tarique Rahman.

Party members will also line both sides of the road from the airport to Evercare Hospital to greet him.

Upon arrival, Tarique Rahman is expected to go directly to Evercare Hospital to visit his mother, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who is currently undergoing treatment there in critical condition.

He is later expected to stay at a residence at 196 Gulshan Avenue, adjacent to his mother’s home, ‘Firoza’.

Meanwhile, BNP has appointed retired Brigadier General AKM Shamsul Islam as its chief security officer to oversee security arrangements for both Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.

The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement signed by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who said Shamsul Islam will coordinate all necessary security measures to ensure the safety of the two senior party leaders.
