Changes likely to be in police’s top ranks: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that changes will be made at the top levels of police force, while also confirming that the first session of the 13th Parliament will be convened on March 12.

The minister made the remarks on Sunday while speaking to reporters after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarek Rahman at the Secretariat.

Responding to questions about an attack on an embroidery factory in the capital’s Adabor area reportedly linked to extortion demands, the minister said he has ordered an investigation and called for a report to be submitted.

“Such news has reached me as well. I have asked for an inquiry and directed that an investigation report be submitted. If such incidents have taken place, we will take strict action,” he said.

When asked whether major changes in the top police leadership were imminent, the minister confirmed that some changes would indeed take place, though he did not elaborate on the timeline or specifics.

The minister also provided details about the upcoming parliamentary session, saying the matter was discussed during the meeting.

He explained that the President must issue a gazette notification at least 15 days before a session begins, based on a summary sent from the Parliament Secretariat through the Prime Minister’s Office.

The President will summon the session on the advice of the Prime Minister.

He confirmed that March 12 has been set as the date for the first parliamentary session. The agenda for the session was also discussed, he said, adding that it would include the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, presentation of ordinances issued during the interim government period, customary condolence motions and the President’s address to the House.

However, the minister said the final selection of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker would be made later.

When asked whether there had been any discussion about electing a new President, he said no such discussion had taken place yet.
