Chittagong Medical College faces power cut over unpaid bills

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has cut off power connections to Chittagong Medical College due to unpaid electricity bills.
However, the hospital’s electricity connection remains unaffected, ensuring continued medical services for numerous patients.
Chittagong’s BPDB Public Relations Division Assistant Director Akbar Hossen said that the institution’s power supply was disconnected at 11am on Monday.
Chief Engineer of Chittagong BPDB Rizaul Karim said that the college and hospital owe nearly Tk1.28 crore in unpaid bills over the past six months, with the college alone owing Tk6,000,000.
Therefore, the college’s connection was disconnected, but the hospital’s electricity supply has not been cut off due to the continuous treatment of numerous patients there, he added.
Dr Sahena Akter, the principal of Chittagong Medical College, said that the BPDB disconnected the college building’s electricity connection due to unpaid bills.

Also, the electricity department has disconnected the CRB office of the railway eastern zone for non-payment of outstanding bills of about Tk 1.58 lakh. According to the concerned engineers of PDB, the electricity was re-connected around 3:30 pm after about five hours in view of the assurance of payment of the electricity bill.
Railway Eastern Divisional Railway Manager Engineer Saiful Islam said, Railway is a service organization of the government. Such service providers cannot disconnect the power supply. Government office at two o’clock. Control office also has no electricity. If there is an accident of a train, will PDB take the responsibility?
