Govt announces 26 measures to ensure smooth Eid travel

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Thursday outlined 26 decisions aimed at ensuring safe, smooth and comfortable travel for passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

Speaking at a press conference at Shipping Ministry in the Secretariat, the minister said coordinated measures across road, rail and waterways, along with strict monitoring by relevant agencies, would make this year’s Eid journey more pleasant than ever.

“Based on recommendations from all stakeholders and lessons from last year, we have introduced 26 measures. Special monitoring arrangements will remain in place from five days before Eid to five days after,” he said.

To prevent passenger harassment, particularly at Sadarghat terminal, the minister warned that misconduct would not be tolerated.

He added that city corporations and traffic police would work on special duty to ease road congestion, while illegal parking and roadside encroachments will be cleared.

On waterways, the Coast Guard and river police will maintain round-the-clock vigilance to prevent unregulated speedboat movement and improper vessel parking.

Sheikh Rabiul Alam also issued a stern warning against fare hikes, saying no additional charges would be allowed during Eid travel. Mobile courts will remain active to enforce compliance and transport owners and workers have pledged not to overcharge passengers.

To reduce road congestion, factories in the readymade garment sector without urgent export orders have been asked to grant leave to workers in advance.

Addressing extortion in the transport sector, the minister said a zero-tolerance policy has been adopted against illegal toll collection, and strict action will be taken immediately upon receiving complaints.

“We want to ensure safety on roads and waterways. Accountability will be enforced wherever rules are violated. This is our government’s firm commitment,” he said.
