Home Adviser directs police to act neutral in polls duty

Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has called on all police personnel to perform their election-related duties with the highest levels of responsibility, integrity and professionalism.

“Every police member deployed in the field during elections represents the trust of the people. The police must act in a neutral manner,” he said.

The remarks came on Sunday afternoon during an inspection of a training workshop at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Training Academy in Rajarbagh.

The workshop is designed to enhance the efficiency and capacity of police personnel for election duties.

During the inspection, the home adviser issued directives covering police responsibilities in the pre-election, election-day and post-election phases.

He emphasized that conducting national elections is a major state responsibility, and that the role of the police is crucial in ensuring a fair, peaceful, and orderly process.

Lt Gen Jahangir also noted that the government is undertaking comprehensive preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali, Additional IGP (Development) Sardar Nurul Amin, and Additional Police Commissioner (Admin) Md Sarwar were present, along with senior DMP officials.

The inspection focused on 23rd batch of a three-day training workshop aimed at strengthening police capacity ahead of the elections and referendum.

So far, 22 batches have been completed, with 18,150 personnel trained. The programme aims to train a total of 24,342 police personnel through 28 batches across 19 venues in the DMP area.
