Info minister urges accurate presentation of liberation war history to youth

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Tuesday stressed the need to present the authentic history of Bangladesh Liberation War to the younger generation, stating that historical truth cannot be distorted.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion organized by Doctors Association of Bangladesh at Jatiya Press Club, marking Independence and National Day.

The event was titled “Proclaimer of Independence and Zia of the Battlefield.”

Swapan said confusion about the country’s liberation history has persisted for years and emphasized that the events between March 25 and April 10, 1971, must be accurately conveyed to the new generation. He noted that history develops through its own course and cannot be fabricated by any individual or group.

Referring to the political context of the time, he said that although people voted for autonomy in the 1970 elections, the refusal of the Pakistani ruling authorities to transfer power led to the March 25 crackdown, creating widespread uncertainty across the country.

At that critical moment, he said, Ziaur Rahman, then a young military officer, declared resistance and joined the frontline.

Swapan added that Zia’s declaration of independence from the Kalurghat radio station on March 26, 1971, provided direction to the nation during a time of confusion.

He also noted that Tajuddin Ahmad, in his speech on April 10, acknowledged the declaration and resistance.

Highlighting the present era, the minister said that with the advancement of information technology and citizen journalism, it is no longer possible to distort historical facts. He criticized what he described as past efforts by the Awami League to misrepresent history.

Swapan further linked the political legacy of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, describing it as a continuation of efforts to promote multi-party democracy and protect people’s rights.

The discussion was also addressed by State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain and other speakers, including academics and medical professionals.
