Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday morning took part in a road-cleaning program in the capital’s Mirpur area.
The drive began after Fajr prayers in the Manipur neighbourhood. Photos and videos of the initiative were shared on Jamaat’s verified Facebook page.
In the footage, Shafiqur Rahman is seen sweeping the street with a broom, while party leaders and activists collected garbage in polythene bags. He reportedly spent around 15–20 minutes participating in the clean-up effort.
Ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North Mohammad Selim Uddin was also seen taking part in the program.
Speaking during the event, Shafiqur Rahman said: “We want to remove all kinds of garbage in the country through state reforms. We will build a clean country. If we clean our own courtyards, the country will become clean.”
He added that he would continue the initiative regularly while in Dhaka and carry out similar activities elsewhere when outside the capital.
Responding to questions from journalists, the Jamaat ameer said not taking the oath of the BNP Reform Council in July would be “an insult,” adding that the political developments in July paved the way for both himself to become Leader of the Opposition and for Tarique Rahman to assume the office of prime minister.
