‘No third party can influence Dhaka-Beijing ties’

Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen has declared that no external pressure or third party can influence the relationship between China and Bangladesh, while expressing hope that the new government will soon begin implementing the Teesta River master plan.

The ambassador made the remarks on Sunday while speaking to reporters after separate courtesy meetings with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Responding to questions about US pressure to curb Chinese influence in Bangladesh, Yao Wen said both nations remain committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation and continuing the implementation of ongoing projects regardless of outside interference.

“No external pressure or third party can affect China-Bangladesh relations,” the ambassador stated firmly. “Both countries are committed to further strengthening bilateral cooperation.”

On the Teesta River project, which has been under discussion for years, the ambassador expressed optimism. “The Teesta project has been discussed for a long time. It is one of my key expectations that it will begin very soon,” he said.

Describing his first meeting with the new foreign minister, Yao Wen said the discussions were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere, covering a wide range of issues including bilateral relations, economic cooperation and the Rohingya crisis.

The ambassador praised the recently concluded parliamentary elections, calling them a victory for Bangladesh’s democracy and a significant achievement for its people.

He described China as a comprehensive, strategic and cooperative partner of Bangladesh, noting that the foundation of bilateral ties was laid by late President Ziaur Rahman, the father of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and further strengthened during the premiership of late Begum Khaled Zia. China is ready to build on this legacy under the new government, he added.

Yao Wen reaffirmed China’s support for Bangladesh’s unity, stability, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

He said China endorses the new government’s Bangladesh First policy and stands ready to support the country’s role in regional and international affairs.

The ambassador also pledged continued Chinese cooperation in job creation, investment, education and healthcare to support Bangladesh’s path toward self-reliance and democratic development. Commitments were made during the meetings to implement the Teesta project and other long-term initiatives, he added
