Pakistan vows to pursue Iran-US mediation despite mounting challenges

. Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran, acknowledging the presence of significant challenges but pledging to continue its mediation efforts.

Speaking at a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said Islamabad remains engaged in efforts to bring both sides to the negotiating table, despite “obstacles” that have complicated the peace process. He did not elaborate on the specific hurdles, reports Al Jazeera.

His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning, threatening severe military action against Iran if it failed to accept Washington’s conditions for a peace agreement.

“Despite challenges, Pakistan will continue to promote dialogue and create conditions conducive to meaningful negotiations among relevant stakeholders,” Andrabi said.

He noted that both Washington and Tehran view Pakistan as a neutral intermediary, reflecting a degree of trust in its diplomatic role.

As a positive development, Andrabi highlighted Iran’s decision to allow 20 Pakistani-flagged vessels to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “harbinger of peace” and a step towards easing regional tensions. However, he did not confirm whether any such vessels had yet transited the route.

The Strait of Hormuz has faced significant disruptions since Iran imposed restrictions on oil and gas shipments following the escalation of conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran on February 28. The situation has contributed to rising global energy prices and economic strain.

Andrabi also pointed to ongoing high-level diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Tehran. He referenced a recent telephone conversation on March 28 between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which both leaders emphasised the importance of trust-building to advance mediation efforts.

Pakistan, he added, will continue to work with all relevant parties to support regional stability and de-escalation
