PM holds meeting with top business leaders

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held an extended meeting with leading business figures on Saturday, focusing on improving the investment climate, addressing industry challenges and tackling the ongoing energy crisis.

The meeting took place at Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, starting at around 11:30 AM and continuing for nearly three and a half hours.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said a wide range of issues related to trade, commerce and investment were discussed.

Business leaders highlighted key challenges and offered recommendations for improvement.

“Problems facing the business sector were discussed and possible solutions were explored. Business leaders shared their perspectives,” he said.

According to the minister, several issues were resolved during the meeting, while others remain under consideration and will be addressed through further discussions.

Responding to a question on investment, he said the primary goal of the meeting was to create a more business-friendly environment.

“The Prime Minister listened carefully to identify barriers to investment and is keen to resolve them quickly,” he added, noting that some concerns were addressed immediately, while others will be taken up in follow-up meetings.

Discussions also covered the reopening of closed factories and industrial units, including state-owned enterprises.

“We explored ways to restart factories that have been shut down. We are hopeful that many of these can be revived,” he said.

On energy support, Khasru noted that Bangladesh is receiving assistance from various multilateral organisations.

The meeting was attended by top business leaders, including representatives from DBL Group, Apex Footwear, Pran-RFL Group, Pacific Jeans, Bay Group, Incepta Pharmaceuticals, Runner Group, Rangs Group and ACI.

Also present were Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, State Minister for Power and Energy Anindya Islam Amit and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury, among others.

Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said Tarique Rahman reported to office at around 10:46 AM despite the day being a public holiday.
