Shafiqul Alam rejects attempts to incite fear, tension

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Saturday called on political parties, religious leaders, community organisations and international actors to reject any attempts to spread fear or exploit social tensions.

“Bangladesh’s strength has always been its diversity and the shared belief that this country must be safe and dignified for everyone,” Alam said.

Responding to recent reports by Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, he thanked the organisation along with other NGOs and rights groups for remaining vigilant and highlighting incidents of violence affecting minority communities.

Like many citizens, Alam said he is deeply concerned about the safety and dignity of every Bangladeshi.

“I understand the fear and trauma these incidents create, especially among religious minorities who are an inseparable part of our society,” he noted.

Emphasising the government’s commitment, the Press Secretary said protecting all communities; Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim, is a personal priority for him.

“Every reported case is being investigated, and in most cases arrests have already been made,” he said.

According to Alam, the Home Ministry is working closely with local authorities to respond swiftly, protect victims and witnesses and ensure the law is applied fairly.

At the same time, he urged honest and responsible dialogue. “Not every crime involving a minority citizen is a hate crime and saying so clearly matters,” he said, adding that mislabelling incidents can dilute attention from genuine hate crimes, such as the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das.

Alam also pointed to the long-term impact of politicising the security forces.

“Since the fall of Hasina government, criminal groups and local rivalries have taken advantage of uncertainty and people from all communities have suffered,” he said.

“This is a time for responsibility, not division,” he added.
