Ace Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan has become the first bowler to take 50 wickets in Twenty20 World Cups.
This is the ninth edition of the world event that is being played in the USA and the West Indies.
Only Shakib and India skipper Rohit Sharma have played all the editions since its inception in 2007.
Shakib was on 49 wickets before the India clash and interestingly he took the wicket of Rohit, who is jointly holding the record of appearing in most T20 World Cups alongside Shakib, to achieve the 50-wicket landmark at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua Saturday.
Bangladesh skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto elected to bowl first and India opening pair Rohit and Virat Kohli made an aggressive start.
The Tigers started with spin from both ends as off-spinner Mahedi Hasan bowled the first over and Shakib the second.
Both Rohit and Kohli took charge on Shakib in his first over as he conceded 15 runs with one four and six.
Shakib was hit for a six in the first ball of the fourth over, his second, by Rohit and also leaked a boundary in the third delivery.
But Shakib bounced back in the fourth ball by bagging the important wicket of Rohit.
It was an arm ball by Shakib and Rohit tried to slog it only to manage a top edge which was grabbed at cover region by Jaker Ali Anik.
And thus, Shakib achieved the 50-wicket milestone in T20 World Cups.
The left-arm all-rounder has recorded this feat in 42 games while Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is second on the list with 39 wickets in 34 matches.
Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga is in third position with 38 wickets in as many matches while his fellow countryman Wanindu Hasaranga is fourth with 37 wickets in just 19 games.
Rohit and Shakib has played 16 times against each other and Rohit has scored 146 runs in 116 deliveries altogether with 125.86 strike rate.
Shakib has notched Rohit’s wicket three times among those 16 innings.
Shakib is not in good rhythm with the ball as he was wicket-less in the first four games of this ongoing T20 World Cup.
He picked up two wickets in the fifth match of the campaign against Nepal at Saint Vincent and took one wicket against India Saturday.
Shakib bowled three overs against India and gave away 37 runs on a pitch that looked good to bat on.
Shakib is also the second most prolific wicket-taker in all T20 Internationals, with 149 scalps in 128 matches, second only to New Zealand’s Tim Southee (164 wickets).
