State minister claims Prof Yunus awarded PM with July Uprising ‘trophy’

A cabinet member has alleged that Professor Muhammad Yunus traveled to the United Kingdom in June 2025 to confirm electoral arrangements with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam made the assertion Tuesday while addressing lawmakers during deliberations on the President’s speech, characterizing the visit as presenting the outcome of the July-August movement, what he termed as a trophy, to the BNP leader.

The Bogura-2 parliamentarian declared his party the exclusive guardian of three pivotal moments in national history: the 1971 independence movement, the 1990 democratic transition, and the recent July-August uprising.

Alam contended that while the Awami League can reference 1971 and 1990, it cannot claim connection to the July-August events, and opposition groups emphasizing the recent movement lack ties to earlier historical milestones.

His statements provoked disruption among opposition parliamentarians. Responding to the disturbance, Alam maintained that the interim government chief’s London consultation with Tarique Rahman demonstrates who directed the student-led public movement.

The minister described a single leadership figure, asserting the interim administration head traveled to Britain to confer with this individual and returned with an election schedule that enabled free and fair voting.

Alam praised Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, a freedom fighter, while noting that BNP legitimacy stems from founder President Ziaur Rahman. He claimed government benches contain numerous liberation war veterans while opposition seats lack them, though the Speaker corrected this by identifying Gazi Nazrul Islam from Satkhira-3 as a freedom fighter.

Referencing past governance, Alam recalled that Begum Khaleda Zia incorporated opposition figures into her 2001 administration, contrasting this with current opposition leaders whom he accused of emphasizing the July-August movement while diminishing the importance of 1971 and 1990.

Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman took the floor immediately following the minister’s remarks, rejecting the claims as factually incorrect.

Rahman stated his group pledged from inception to avoid conventional opposition tactics, promising cooperation on beneficial initiatives while resisting policies that undermine citizens’ rights.

He demanded removal of what he termed false information from official parliamentary records.

Speaker Ahmad assured parliament that statements would undergo review with any unparliamentary or inaccurate content subject to deletion from the record.
