. Tarique Rahman has formally assumed charge as the Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), following the death of party Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
The announcement was made on Friday through BNP’s official Facebook page.
According to the statement, the position of party chairman became vacant due to Khaleda Zia’s demise, prompting a meeting of BNP National Standing Committee in line with the party constitution.
“At the meeting, National Standing Committee unanimously decided to formally appoint Tarique Rahman as the Chairman of BNP,” the statement said, adding that he has taken over the responsibility in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Tarique Rahman held an emergency meeting with members of the party’s Standing Committee, which began at around 9:30 PM.
