Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday expressed gratitude to party leaders and activists, all citizens, law enforcement agencies and media professionals for their support and cooperation following his return to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile.
In a statement sent to the media on Thursday evening, Rahman thanked those who came out in large numbers to welcome him, describing the reception as historic and unprecedented.
The statement, signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said Tarique Rahman returned home from London after a prolonged period abroad and was warmly received by people from all walks of life. From Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the 300 Feet Road area in Purbachal, huge crowds gathered to greet him, turning large parts of the capital into what the statement described as a “sea of people.”
According to the statement, Tarique Rahman conveyed his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the citizens who participated in the reception, calling their presence a reflection of public hope and commitment to democratic values.
He also expressed gratitude to leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate and affiliated organisations across Dhaka and other parts of the country. In addition, he thanked leaders and members of other political parties and professional organisations who took part in or supported the welcoming programme.
The BNP leader further acknowledged the role of the security and law enforcement agencies in ensuring that the reception was conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner. He thanked members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion, police and other security forces for carrying out their duties with professionalism and sincerity.
Tarique Rahman also expressed appreciation for journalists and media workers who covered the events throughout the day, noting their role in informing the public and documenting what the party described as a significant political moment.
The statement said Rahman considered the successful completion of the reception programme a collective effort involving political activists, state agencies and the media, and reiterated his hope that such cooperation would continue in the interest of peace, stability and democracy in the country.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh earlier on Thursday, marking his first visit home since leaving the country 17 years ago. His arrival and subsequent public reception have drawn widespread attention and reactions across the political landscape.
