The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday at State Guest House Jamuna, reaffirming UN’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s democratic transition ahead of the upcoming general election in February.
During the meeting, Lewis praised strong partnership between UN and interim government and discussed a broad range of issues related to Bangladesh’s development goals and reform agenda.
The primary focus of the discussion was the forthcoming national election.
Lewis assured continued UN support to Bangladesh Election Commission to help ensure the polls are free, fair, transparent and peaceful.
“UN fully supports the February general election as it is crucial for the country’s democratic transition,” Lewis said.
Both sides also explored ways UN could contribute to strengthening the electoral process and supporting the government’s broader reform initiatives.
In addition, preparations for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and an international conference on Rohingya crisis, scheduled for later this month, were reviewed.
Chief Adviser Yunus and Lewis expressed serious concern over the sharp decline in international funding for Rohingya humanitarian response.
They noted that the funding gap is already affecting essential services, including education, in the refugee camps.
Yunus called for sustained global solidarity and enhanced international assistance to address the shortfall and ensure continued humanitarian support for the Rohingya population.
Lewis reaffirmed UN’s unwavering support for Bangladesh’s ongoing reforms and transition efforts, emphasizing the organization’s long-term commitment to promoting sustainable development and prosperity in the country.
