Voter count drops by nearly 11 lakh in referendum

Election Commission (EC) has revised the voter count in referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter, resulting in a reduction of nearly 11 lakh voters compared to the previously published figures.

The updated figures were released in a supplementary gazette on Thursday.

According to the revised data, the total number of valid votes cast decreased by 10,73,616. ‘Yes’ votes fell by 9,74,660, bringing the total to 4,72,25,980, while ‘No’ votes dropped by 1,11,493 to 2,19,60,231.

Earlier, the gazette published on February 13 had reported 4,82,66,660 ‘Yes’ votes and 2,20,71,726 ‘No’ votes.

The supplementary gazette, signed by Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed of EC Secretariat, clarified the new figures.

The EC did not specify the precise reasons for the adjustments but stated that the revision was made by its order.

The referendum was held to gauge public consent for the “July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order, 2025”, following the student-led mass uprising in July 2024.

The initial gazette had recorded a total of 7,76,95,023 votes cast, of which 74,22,637 were invalid, leaving 7,02,72,386 valid votes.

Under the revised count, the total votes cast fell to 7,66,21,407, with 74,35,196 invalid votes, resulting in 6,91,86,211 valid votes.

Interestingly, while both ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes decreased, the number of invalid votes increased by 12,559.
