Bangladesh and India engaged in comprehensive discussions on Wednesday aimed at revitalizing their diplomatic partnership across multiple dimensions as both nations seek a fresh start following the establishment of Bangladesh’s democratically elected administration.
Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman held talks examining opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation while exchanging perspectives on regional and international developments.
Jaishankar expressed satisfaction with hosting the Bangladeshi delegation, sharing his remarks through his verified social media account and noting both sides agreed to maintain close communication channels.
The meeting included Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M Riaz Hamidullah among the participants.
The visit represents the first senior-level diplomatic engagement with India since the BNP government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office, arriving after a period marked by considerable tension between the neighboring countries.
Bangladesh authorities characterize their approach as seeking normalized relations founded on principles of mutual respect and reciprocal benefits, with the goodwill mission reflecting intensified dialogue between the two nations in recent weeks.
While Dhaka officially designates the trip as a goodwill visit, government officials indicated to UNB that substantive discussions with New Delhi aim to better comprehend current bilateral dynamics and address priority concerns for Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister Rahman arrived in the Indian capital Tuesday with a schedule including separate meetings Wednesday with Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson SM Mahbubul Alam stated Bangladesh will stress the importance of stable bilateral development grounded in dignity, mutual confidence, respect, and common interests during these consultations.
Indian officials extended a warm reception to the visiting foreign minister upon his New Delhi arrival.
Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the warm historical connections between the nations rooted in strong interpersonal relationships, asserting the visit will strengthen the India-Bangladesh partnership.
Following the New Delhi engagements, Foreign Minister Rahman is expected to travel to Mauritius Thursday morning aboard the same flight as his Indian counterpart Jaishankar to participate in the ninth Indian Ocean Conference.
The diplomatic outreach signals potential thawing of relations after recent strains, with both countries appearing committed to constructive engagement on trade, energy cooperation, and strategic matters affecting the South Asian region.
