The death toll from the devastating floods in India’s northeastern state of Assam has risen to 61, with more than 1.1 million people affected across over 2,000 villages, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

ASDMA said 14 people died on Friday alone, including seven in Charaideo and six in Sivasagar. One person remains missing, reports Hindustan Times.

On Saturday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the flood situation, damage and ongoing relief operations. Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and assured the Centre’s full support for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

According to the chief minister, more than 41,000 people are taking shelter in 162 relief camps, while ministers are overseeing relief operations in the affected districts.

Although water levels in major rivers have begun to recede following reduced rainfall over the past 48 hours, flooding continues to affect 12 districts, with Sibsagar, Charaideo and Jorhat among the worst hit.

The state government has allocated Rs 111 crore for relief and distributed food and other essential supplies. Health and livestock teams have also been deployed to prevent disease outbreaks in flood-hit areas.

Meanwhile, waterlogging has affected around 15,000 people in parts of Guwahati, prompting authorities to accelerate drainage and desilting work.
