Major Sadeq’s wife shown arrested in anti-terrorism case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed Sumaiya Jafrin, wife of Major Sadeq, arrested in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Gulshan Police Station.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zunaid passed the order after hearing an application submitted by the investigation officer.

The matter was confirmed in court by Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain, the general registration officer of Gulshan Police Station.

Sumaiya Jafrin was earlier arrested on August 6 in a Bhatera Police Station case over allegations of providing guerrilla training to Awami League activists.

She was placed on a five-day remand on August 7 and, after completion of remand, gave a confessional statement before the court on August 12. She has since been in jail.

On December 11, DB Police Inspector Mozammel Haque Mamun of the Gulshan zonal team sought to show her arrested in the Gulshan anti-terrorism case.

The application stated that, based on statements of the arrested accused and preliminary investigation, Sumaiya Jafrin was involved as a financier, adviser and instigator of a banned organisation, allegedly engaging in activities aimed at undermining national sovereignty and public security.

It further claimed that she maintained regular contact with influential members of the banned group and provided financial support for anti-government activities in Dhaka and elsewhere.

Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the application on behalf of the state, following which the court granted the order.

According to the case statement, on April 22 a group of 30–35 people brought out a protest march near Jabbar Tower in Gulshan-1 under the banner of the banned student organisation Chhatra League and the outlawed Awami League. Police detained several protesters while others fled, and a case was filed the same day.
